Drums, cymbals, Bihu dancers — Assamese New Year’s here

Guwahati, April 14 (IANS) The lilting beats of drums, cymbals, and the mellifluous notes of the bamboo flute, accompanied by the graceful gyrations of Bihu dancers -- the spectacle is being staged across the hills and dales of Assam as the people herald the New Year or Rongali Bihu first day celebrations Thursday.

The Assamese New Year begins Friday. Hundreds of people thronged Bihu pandals across the state with dancers in their traditional fineries performing Bihu dances to the beat of dhols or the traditional drums and lilting notes of flutes made of bamboo and buffalo horns.

'Bihu is the time for...

The Drums and Cymbals That Make Up a Drum Kit

The traditional complete drum kit usually comes with bass and snare drums, two mounted tom-toms, a tom that sits on the ground, and hi-hat, ride, and crash cymbals.

The Bass Drum

The biggest drum in the set is the base drum. It is located in the middle of all the other drums and sits on the ground. There is a foot mechanism that is connected to a mallet that hits the drum when the percussionist depresses the mechanism toward the floor. In certain cases, this foot mechanism connects two mallets and will require two feet to produce the drumming sound. Bass drums...

A Kid’s Review
This review is from: MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper Pads

I’ve tried the Evans muffle rings. I’ve tried the Rem-O’s. I’ve tried paper towels taped onto the head. None of them compare to Moongel, because Moongel is the most effective and simple. Not only are they small and easy to apply, but they can be just as helpful as the muffle rings. The great part is the fact that you can alter how much you want to muffle, as well as the drum pitch merely by moving the pad around the head, and closer/further from the center of the head. It’s as simple as that, and it leaves much room for custom sound shaping.
The very reasonably priced pack comes in a portable, cute little thingy with 4 Moongel pads inside. Priced at a little over a buck per gel, these are most definiely the best bang for your buck. As a special bonus, they are reusable even after extensive use. All it takes is a simple soap and water wash, and you’re good to go again. Considering the fact that each pad can be reused about 5 or 6 times, that’s 4 drums muffled for a couple years for a mere 6 dollars! You can’t go wrong with RTOM’s Moongel, ladies and gentlemen. You just can’t.

Hope this was helpful.

I used some of these on a session a while back, and thought they worked great. But, when I bought some myself, I was a little surprised to pay $10. I’m a recording engineer, so they don’t last as long as they might if you left them on one kit forever. Anyway, I quickly realized they were made of the same stuff as those sticky ‘wallwalker’ type toys that you see at the grocery store. So, I spent $1, and used some scissors to cut a toy octopus into pieces. They work great, and at that price, I can let drummers keep them. Plus, I kind of like the tentacle shape. I find that as you move the pad towards the center of the drum, the sound gets tighter and less ringy. Putting one of these just outside of the center of a very ringy snare will tame it better than tape, o-rings, or anything else I’ve heard.
